This is a king too that had a census taken even though he knew God had forbidden it and a good friend warned him.
I remember reading this when I used to read the Bible, but I never understood why such a seemingly harmless act was forbidden. Anyone care to "cast some new light" on the subject?
i am new to this forum, and so far all i read is how we all hide from the wittnesses we now, or don't answer the phone, or walk the other way when they walk down the street.
to tell you a little about myself, i grew up a j.w, i was married when i was 21. my first wife was abused by a brother in her hall for years.
we were married for about a year , when one day i got a phone call from a man at the watchtower and track society.
they probly wish they had the balls to do the same thing.
I just hope you are right. I, and others here, suspect many of them secretely want out but either don't have the guts to leave or they have family ties. Let's just hope more people work up the courage to think critically and objectively about the religion.

My vote goes to the 1914 bit, and how they try to "prove" it by using the story about that wacky king in the book of Daniel. I never did understand how that story had any direct correlation to the timeline. Oh wait, but the book of Daniel mentions "seven times," so it must be related.
some christians, especially pacifists or conscientious objectors feel it is inappropriate for christians to fight in war.
they, like the watchtower, will respond that warriors like king david were israelites who fought for god's nation, and this makes them different ... well ... not so fast oh brain-dead idiots filled with nonsense, and fully unable to think clearly.

Myself, I don't believe we should fight a war unless we have no other alternative. I think some Christian groups take war way out of hand. I have one friend, who is a Christian, who said he would like to kill every man, woman, and child in Afghanastan for what happened during 9-11.
Granted, 9-11 was an atrocity, and the offender(s) should be punished, but is it really Christian to openly declare such hatred towards a foreign culture, especially when most of the people probably are probably as innocent as we are?
It's like certain groups care about little else besides politics and war. They seldom talk about Jesus and how he loved people. I know I'm generalizing, but I have seen a few people like this. However, there are still good groups out there that make an honest endeavor to do some good.

Actually,the book Questions Young People Ask Answers That Work says otherwise. It encourages teens to obey parents even if they do not set a good example. For instance, the book says "Parents who are hot-tempered or immoral, who are drunkards, or who bicker with each other - are they really worthy of honor? Yes, for the Bible condemns holding any parent 'in derision." (13)
today while at work at reminsing about the old days as a joe wit i recalled what a horrible life sisters had in the truth.
if conducting a study in they must wear head scarfs, they were not allowed to give talks alone, they had a very strict dressing standard, makeup, dresses, jewerly, they couldnt even apply for bethel (at least when i was younger there were hardly any single sisters in bethel).

What really amazes me is these sister probably wouldn't give "worldy" guys a chance, even though "worldly" gents would more often than not allow them to have more freedom.
Also, I know this one sister, who is about 15. She is extremely bright, and expressed her desires to live single. Unfortunately, older sisters have been subtely or not so subtely, depending on how you look at it, hinting that she will eventually have to marry. I wish I could talk to this girl again. For some strange reason, I have this feeling she is going to throw her life away, and she has so much potential.

You know, I've always wondered why there are so many citations from other Bibles in various study guides. If the NWT is so perfect, then why do they cite scriptures from other Bibles? Or is this another smoke and mirrors technique to make it appear that they give other Bibles some credit?
i had an interesting conversation this weekend with an elderly sister.
she told me about a letter she received from wt not more than a month ago.
it seems they had a program in place where they would "hold" money that would be used in the event of your death to pay funeral arrangements.
Elsewhere, its funny you should say this. Just today I read CH.3 of "Bushwacked" which talks about how wrong it is that the richest people and corps in America frequently pay NO tax.
I've been trying to get this point across to Christian Convervatives for years, but all I get is the same dribble about how they are all "self made" men.
